Mark Siler; and Rev. Bill warren

Chaplain Russell Barrett was installed as the new community funded chaplain at the Marion Minimum Security Unit March 11, 2009. Chaplain Barrett replaced Rev. Jimmy Cannon who served in this capacity for 25 years.

Chaplain Barrett previous ministry experience includes: six years service as a missionary to Peru (he is fluent in Spanish), work with the United Methodist Children’s Homes in Augusta, Ga., and 21 1/2 years as a Army Chaplain. Prior to assuming duties here he was a community funded chaplain with High Country Prison Ministries serving the Avery/Mitchell Correctional Institution since 2006. Russell has lived in McDowell County since 2005.

Our Chaplain ministry provides a part time chaplain who works with inmates and their families at Marion’s two correctional institutions. He provides counseling, worship, and educational opportunities for the inmates. He also assists them with personal, family matters, and the transition process back into society.
